Course Description

Role of information systems in supporting managers, decision making and organizational goals; planning and managing e-business systems; global competition; social and ethical issues.

Course Objectives

1. Students will understand important current issues and trends in information technology and electronic commerce, including the impact of technology on organizations, managers and users and the ethical, social and security issues related to information technology;
2. Students will understand important business information systems concepts and applications, such as value chains, strategic information systems, supply chain management, customer relationship management, enterprise resource planning, and business intelligence;
3. Students will understand the strategic role of information technology in marketing, financial management, operations and human resource strategies and overall organization strategy;
4. Students will have a general understanding of the life cycle methodologies used for developing applications. They will understand the roles and responsibilities of management, end users and information systems professionals in IS development and management;
5. Students will know how to organize a spreadsheet application and properly use formulas and functions;
6. Students will know how to create database tables, define database relationships, populate data into tables, and develop queries and reports in Access.

Learning Outcomes

1. Students will demonstrate the ability to apply spreadsheet and database software to improve managerial decision making. Specifically,
• Students will be able to properly prepare spreadsheet to business problems using absolute and relative formulas, functions, pivotal, what-if, and sensitivity analysis
• Students will be able to create a data base in a relational database management system and develop forms, queries, and reports
2. Students will comprehend the major information systems concepts, explain IT/IS terminology and notation, describe a variety of IT/IS applications, discuss the procedures and roles of business users in acquiring information systems, and identify IT/IS management issues from the embedded questions in the exam and/or a case study
