Course Description
Fundamental concepts of database processing; conceptual, logical, and physical design of databases; the use of SQL and DBMS technology for relational database implementation; and general business database management issues.
Course Objectives
The general goal of this course is to provide adequate technical detail
while emphasizing the organizational and implementation issues relevant
to the management of data in an organizational environment. Topics include
relational data modeling, logical database design, physical database design,
client/server systems, data warehousing, and database administration.
Upon completion of the course, the student should
be able to:
- understand advantages and disadvantage of the database approach to
data management, the components of a database system, entity-relationship
models, and normalizations
- apply entity-relationship models, normalization, and indexes to conceptual
data modeling, the logical database design, and physical database design
- understand client/server architecture and distributed databases in
organizations
- understand the issues and terminology used in data warehousing
- use SQL Plus environment to write SQL queries to create and retrieve
data from ORACLE relational databases
